๐ŸŽฎ What is Imposter Game?

Imposter Game (also known as Who is the Spy, Spyfall, or Undercover) is a thrilling social deduction party game where players must identify the imposter among them through clever questioning and observation.

The game tests your ability to bluff, deduce, and communicate under pressure. It's perfect for parties, family gatherings, team building events, or virtual game nights on Zoom.

๐ŸŽฏ Game Objective

  • For Civilians: Identify and vote out the Imposter before time runs out.
  • For the Imposter: Blend in without getting caught, OR correctly guess the secret word.

๐Ÿ“˜ Basic Rules

๐Ÿ‘ฅ
Players
3-10 players (4-8 recommended)
โฑ๏ธ
Duration
5-10 minutes per round
๐ŸŽฒ

Core Mechanics

  1. Secret Word Assignment: All Civilians receive the same secret word (e.g., "Pizza"). The Imposter receives a different word or "IMPOSTER".
  2. Discussion Phase: Players take turns giving clues about their word without saying it directly.
  3. Voting Phase: After discussion, players vote on who they think is the Imposter.
  4. Win Conditions: Civilians win if they correctly identify the Imposter. The Imposter wins if they survive OR correctly guess the secret word.

๐ŸŽฏ How to Play (Step-by-Step)

1

Everyone Views Their Word

Pass the device around. Each player taps to see their word, then passes it to the next person. Civilians see the secret word (e.g., "Coffee"). The Imposter sees "IMPOSTER" or a different word.

2

Start the Discussion Round

Set a timer for 5-7 minutes. Players take turns giving ONE clue about their word. The clue should be vague enough not to reveal the word to the Imposter, but specific enough to prove you know it.

Example: If the word is "Coffee", you might say: "I drink this every morning" or "It's hot and bitter".

3

Ask Questions (Optional)

Players can ask each other questions to test their knowledge. For example: "Where would you typically find this?" or "Is this something you use daily?"

4

Vote for the Imposter

When time is up (or when the group is ready), everyone points at who they think is the Imposter. The person with the most votes is eliminated.

5

Reveal & Determine Winner

If the Imposter was voted out, Civilians win! If a Civilian was voted out, the Imposter gets one chance to guess the secret word. If they guess correctly, Imposter wins! Otherwise, Civilians win.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Pro Tips for Civilians

โœ… DO

  • Give specific but not obvious clues
  • Watch for hesitation or vague answers
  • Ask follow-up questions to suspicious players
  • Build on previous clues to prove you know the word
  • Pay attention to body language and eye contact

โŒ DON'T

  • Say the word directly or any part of it
  • Give clues that are too obvious (e.g., "It barks" for "Dog")
  • Repeat what others have said
  • Vote randomly without reasoning
  • Reveal the word even if you think someone is the Imposter

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ Pro Tips for Imposters

1. Listen Carefully to the First Clue

The first player usually gives a broad clue. Use it to narrow down the category (food, animal, object, etc.).

2. Be Vague but Confident

Say things like "I see this often" or "It's useful" that could apply to many things. Never hesitateโ€”confidence sells the lie.

3. Deflect Suspicion

If someone gives a vague clue, politely question them: "That's a bit generic, don't you think?" This shifts attention away from you.

4. Take Mental Notes

Gather clues from everyone's descriptions. By the end, you should have a good guess at the word.

5. Know When to Guess

If you're about to be voted out, make your best guess at the secret word. You have nothing to lose!
